Danny Barnes, Silas Herman at Fox Theater May 19

Danny Barnes, Silas Herman with The Sweet Lillies, Old Salt Union

April 28, 2017

Danny Barnes is already known as an iconic American musician, a banjo playing innovator who’s earned high praise from everybody from Bill Frisell and Dave Matthews to Steve Martin, who presented Danny with the Prize for Excellence in Banjo in 2015.

From the days with his groundbreaking Austin band, The Bad Livers, to his two decade solo career experimenting with electronic music, jazz, old time string band music and more, he’s a genre-bending, rule-breaking original who prefers to color outside the lines.

Now, with Stove Up, released March 3, 2017, he’s showing us that it was always a choice, that he’s always had the chops to play straight ahead bluegrass banjo with the best of them. With a top-flight band backing him up, Danny turns in an amazing set of tunes that demonstrate his respect for tradition and his commitment to his own musical voice.

The Sweet Lillies' high-energy, melodic tunes have quickly captured the hearts and music souls of fans in Colorado and beyond. The band credits its appeal to the original and compelling songwriting of all four members. The magnetic combination of Melly Frances (vocals), Julie Gussaroff (upright bass), Becca Bisque (viola), and Danjo Lynn (banjo) give this band a soulful, rare, alluring sound that blends Americana and bluegrass, creating a style all its own.

Based out of Colorado's Front Range, The Sweet Lillies are continually expanding their audience and reach, building fan and critic support through an unwavering commitment to creativity, a contagious love of music and a get-up-and-dance attitude that spreads lots of love and smiles.

Old Salt Union is known for playing music by their own set of rules. While the men who make up this group are not complete rebels, they are certainly thinking about the future of music. They find influence in the bluegrass roots of The Del McCoury Band and Sam Bush, but also draw inspiration from Bill Evans, Danny Elfman, Punch Brothers and many more talented musicians. What makes Old Salt Union so special is their ability to stretch the boundaries of traditional bluegrass music by incorporating in-depth musical arrangements, a catchy hook and an uncanny pop sensibility. They truly are a new generation of bluegrass in the industry.

This all goes down at Boulder’s Fox Theatre on Friday, May 19 and COjam will be dishing out two free tickets to one lucky winner! To enter our contest, either comment on this page (below) or follow our Facebook page’s related posts that start with a “Free Ticket Alert!”
